"Hi,I have a 18.5 thuundercraft with a 185hp 3.8 chev v6.What exactly are the bennefits of having a hydrofoil.Will it make a difference?Will it make the boat lose top end?Ive seen alot of boats with thim and without them.Which brand is the best?Thanks.Dan"
 
"Basically they will get you u

"Basically they will get you up on plane quicker by putting upwards thrust on the drive and transom thus bringing the bow down quicker. You will get mixed reviews about these but now there is another product out there called "Smart Tabs" that cost a little more than a foil but they are attached to the transom so they are not putting any extra stress on the outdrive. Check them out here or do a google on them

"Thanks Bob,the thing is my boat is 27yrs old and I am kind of worried about that extra stress on the transom,and I think that I will loose top end with the hydofoil.The smart tabs look interesting.I have a 21p prop and a 17 for skiing etc.Which product do you think is better?.Thanks for your help,Dan"

"I guess it would help to know what kind of problem you are trying to correct with the foil or the tabs? The smart tabs attach to the very bottom of the transom where it should be the strongest. Some of the foils you have to drill holes for mounting and others clamp on, some say you lose a bit of top end, others have said their boat leans on an angle. I think it's going to be a personal preference and maybe the extra$$ for smart tabs will sway you one way or the other. If I was looking at both today I would personally go with the smart tabs (just my opinion)"

"I realy dont have a problem,its just with the 21p ittakes a bit to get on plane but the rpm at wot is about 4500.With the 17p it planes very fast but my wot rpm is about 5000.I think ill try the tabs,less pressure on the leg.thanks for the info.Dan"

,just go for a 19p, get a little better holeshot and don't raise the RPM's too high."

That was a very simple answer!!!!A new prop is the answer.I am going to spoil myself and get a ss one.Any suggestions on a brand?Thanks
