"I have twin 130c with 270 drives.
have teleflex mechanical (cable) steering.
Not happy with steering ,it still has 3 inches play in it.
Would I benefit converting to hydraulic steering.?
Boat lives on river in UK max speed 6mph.
Any recommendations Please and approximate costs.
I would do the work myself.
Thanks in anticipation.

"Leslie , I had the same steering problem and found out that the nut had backed off that hooks the cable to sleeve it goes through .Put it back on and don't have any play at all ."

"Hi Leo,
Are you referring to the helm unit at the steering wheel end or transom end attachment?
I have sripped and rebuilt the helm end box ,greasing and freeing up the cable, there is no play/looseness in the steering cable outer endings.
This is why I am thinking hydraulic steering.
Has any one done this conversion ? (2 x 130c's and 270 drives) although at my speeds (6mph)I think that a single 130c/270 set up would cope.

Have you inspected the bushing

Have you inspected the bushing on the steering helmet and the condition of the steering fork? A little bit of play at each component adds up to a lot overall. There are two plastic bushings that can be replaced on the steering fork that makes a BIG difference.

"And, if that is the trouble, converting to hydraulic won't fix the problem. Disconnect the steering cable from the "tiller arm" on the drive at the transom. HAve someone hold that end and see if you still have play. IFSO, helm and cables are the problem and hydraulic is an option. If not check per "Mike's" post above."

"Leslie, I was referring to the transom end . And I only saw this by accident with the boat on the trailer and standing out on the ground."
