hydraulic lifter question

So I bought a used LM318 with about 1200hrs on it this spring. The guy I bought it from said it was run last season and runs great, I hooked it up this spring and started it up today. A very loud clicking/tapping noise was heard when it started. I thought "this engine is beat" Then I was hoping that the lifters just needed to fill with oil. After about 5 minutes of running It sounded fine. Oil pressure was instantly at 40lbs upon start up. Does that seem reasonable? My 454 Crusaders don't do that at the beginning of the season though.

Start it again after a day off. If noise does not re-occur, you are probably home free. If noise scenario reoccurs, you have trouble.

Agreed, and DON'T rev it up! Let it sit there idling until it warms up. If the noise goes away--I'm thinking it's a collapsed lifter or two and it will clear up--then change the oil and filter.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info guys. I started it just a while ago and it didn't make the noise so so far so good. A buddy of mine says to put some Marvel Mystery Oil in the oil. Good advice, or something out of the 1950's?
