Hybrid engine with transmission configuration recommendations

I am trying to come up with a highly reliable hybrid engine configuration for a sailboat in the extreme cold weather (arctic).

I am looking at a Cummins diesel 160hp with a very basic configuration and modifying the drive shaft some to extend to an electric motor. I plan on including regeneration systems for the batteries and not concerned with them.

Clutching and transmission are the weak links in my chain. I want 2 speeds. A low and a high, at least. I want a transmission that in a worst case scenario, I can kick off without too much pain if anything were to go wrong. Even if premodification is required.

Also, what is a really simple and reliable clutching system I can connect to the links in my chain.

Suggestions?

sounds like you are going down the parallel hybrid configuration...you may want to revisit the series configuration, similar to what the railroad locomotives use...you can eliminate the transmission there...

Thanks for the keywords. That alone gave me a nice push.
I am shooting for a Series/parallel drivetrain where I can lose any single part in the chain and possibly 2, in the event anything goes wrong, and I can still get home. Redundant or even thirdinary. Having the ability to just shift a link in the chain into neutral appears to be the better design.
Most of my reliability is going into the diesel because it's my engine, cooking and heating source (main). Everything will be to support it or it's redundancy.

I really want reverse, forward 1st and 2nd gear, if possible. But it is a complex piece in the chain where in an absolute worst case, I wouldn't even need, to get home. If I stand a shot at removing it in a remote location.
I will have an arc welder with me but I don't want to have to need it.
