"So this weekend I set out to replace some zinc anodes on my alpha one. Took care of the gimbal housing zinc, the trim tab zinc, and the two "dome" zincs on either side of the drive housing....I also noticed that on the underside of the hull about 3 feet from the transom was a flat hull anode which unfortunately crumbled while I removed it. The bolts from it ran through the hull into the engine compartment and there was a wire from the gas tank to one of the bolts....any idea where I could find another one of these? Or is it really necessary? I believe it is called "dynabar" but I could not find it in the West Marine catalog.."

""Or is it really necessary?"

Ayuh,... That the ultimate Ground for the hull's Bonding System....
Seems pretty important to Me..."

"not to offend, just to be clear, from the link you provide it states:
"The bronze Dynaplate material also serves as the next sacrificial metal on the galvanic scale after your zincs, providing another buffer against corrosion of stainless steel parts."

So it's not as sacrificial as a Zinc but it is on the scale."

"Thanks everyone. It is in fact a dynaplate. Wish I hadn't broken it, these little plates aren't cheap....but then again, nothing in this little pasttime of ours is!"

"They are actually fairly brittle as they are a sintered vs cast or machined part. Sintered parts are made by subjecting small, generally spherical, particles to heat and pressure until they stick together. Sort of like your basic elcheapo cooler. The advantage of this is that the effective surface area of the part it very large compared to its external dimensions."

"Ya learn something new every day.. I have one of these on my boat, and never took a real good look at it until now.. I always just figured it was a zinc hull grounding anode. Mine is starting to look a little rough, but I'm in fresh water, and I can still read the name so it should do for one more year.. My other anodes are taking a beating though! I replaced the trim/fin one on the OD last year, and by the looks of it I will have to replace it again this year it really showing a lot of pits so it's obviously doing it's job.. I'm plugged in at the marina 24/7 so I may have to install a blocker.. Thanks for this post, I'll order one of these for next fall"
