" im on the market for a run around boat and i found one at a good price . its a 1990 baretta bow-rider with a FWC volvo 130 I/O (some sort of volvo drive as well , but i dont know the model .

heres my question . im an outboard guy . i rebuild them , know them , and thats all ive ever owned so the I/O scene is all new to me . what should i look for in this motor ?? what things should i check etc etc ?? any heads up on common problems ??? i understand its only a 4 banger and probably not all that powerful , but how is the reliability ? Thanks in advance . also , do you think this boat/motor combo would be capable of pulling up a average weight skier ???

also as a side note , this would not have been my first choice while looking , but the opportunity presents itself and the price is LOOOOOWWWWWW !!!
ive been told it runs great , the boat is in really good shape as well , so id like to learn a little bit more about this motor . thanks again "

"Jeff, the folks on the sternd

"Jeff, the folks on the sterndrive board could probably answer your questions specifically about the sterndrive. The engine itself is usually an automotive model that has been "marinized" for a boat. In a nutshell, if you approach the engine like you would a used car engine, you'd cover most of the major items. Reliability is as good as the maintenance and care the engine has received. A beat-up or neglected boat seldom has a healthy engine, and vice versa. Look at the whole package and bear in mind that a price is usually low for a reason.

You didn't say how big the boat is, but expect decent performance in something no bigger than 18 ft. It will pull a skier if the engine, drivetrain and prop are all good and the boat isn't heavily loaded.

Whatever you do, don't buy this boat on "I've been told...". Check it out thoroughly or pay a mechanic to do it. Boats can be notorious money pits, so spend a few bucks up front for your peace of mind. Good luck!

" hey thanks !! im sorry i for

" hey thanks !! im sorry i forgot to mention the size of the boat , but its a 17 ft bowrider . i know it has been well taken care of and it seems to run well. i just havent had the time to check it out in detail . that will most likely be this weekend . so i was just curious as to common downfalls of the motor and/or build quality . thanks again "

" what drive is on thios unit,

" what drive is on thios unit, The 130 Volvo is from the mid 70's, ie 130 A 130B 130C 130D They stopped making them in 1977. Soo-o-o- You know how parts avail will be, many goodies are not made. Is this boat in Fresh or Lake water. Fresh water cooling was not a standard on these engines
enjoy Ron.. "
