"Four spring (king) salmon: 33 lbs, 23 lbs, 23 lbs and 12 lbs. Two yelloweye (red snapper) 12 lbs and 8 lbs, and two others we ate before even weighing them, but about the same size. A few rock crab, a lingcod and a few other bottom fish.

Going back soon for more, the smilies are starting to arrive.

I took with me my ol' 1976, 22 ft Double Eagle boat: good for overnights and for facing rough weather, but not the most economical to run when it comes to fuel."

Springs? In August? We usually

Springs? In August? We usually fish for those on the Columbia in May and June. 33lbs is a nice fish and nothing tastes better than fresh King salmon on the BBQ! Although to me Ling Cod is a close third right behind halibut. Are you talking Barkley or Clayoquot area? Always good fishing out there.

"Usually Barkley Sound, as you

"Usually Barkley Sound, as you have several runs of smilies coming in now in that area this time of the year: the Nitinat, the Somass and the Sarita are the main ones. However, many of the fish are still offshore. It should get much better during the next few weeks, but at this time one has to work really hard to catch a few fish. Many of the fish just go up the river when they feel some rain and don't hang around too much in the sound.
