how to test timing base

the stator went bad on my motor the timing based looks okay but was told i need to test it....the motor would still start and run with the bad stator......how do I test the timing base

Sry ...its a 1989 88hp johnson outboard

This electrical stuff is actually quite reliable.--------Have you done a compression test as part of the trouble shooting on this motor ?

It wouldn't be running if the timer base was bad.
