"is there any tests that can be done to determine problems with Spark or issues with intermitant spark? I don't want to buy a new Stator to find out something else is the cause of the problem?

Engine has SLOW feature, was running fine after shop repaired timing and replaced 1 coil. now will not start properly. did get into weeds and slowed water flow got engine hot enough to trigger alarm but after would not run full throttle had to idle back to shore to get on trailer? now has hard time starting."

what do you think might be the problem? I am at wits end with this thing seems the more I spend to get it fixxed the more I want to sell the whole thing and get back out of it what I have invested..

"Doug , Hang in there, I know it can be painful ..
You list what can be interpreted as number of different issues Interment spark, SLOW, CARBS/FUEL, and Piston/Damage (from overheating)
Lets start in this order
1. Compression check (follow proper procedure) Post results
2. Status of carbs ? Rebuild or clean ? If yes are you using pre/mix on and external tank ?
3. Hard time strating ? Hot or Cold ? Primer working disconnect primer hose and have someone en-gauge it see if it squirting fuel?
4. Did you do a spark test ? if yes did you move the wire to see if it follows to another cylinder ?
Please try to clarify the above and the guys and myself will hopefully land on something ..
I have some PDF's with instructions on how to test can be pain but will help you. Let me know if you need it.."

Use a flash light look up under the flywheel if you observe brown melting stuff then chances are your stator is bad. At this point I don't think its your problem..
