How to tell if water is pumping?

Long story short, I had a small crash, had to replace the lower unit housing. I rebuilt everything, but messed up connecting the coolant tubes. I got the motor real hot on the river, but shut it down and got towed back to the dock. I rebuilt everything again, I think I did it right this time, the motor starts, and am ready to try boating again.

Question is, how can one tell that the water pump is working and water is properly circulating? I don't want to run too long on the hose, so my plan is to let it idle on the trailer in the river. If it is not working, I know that the overheating alarm works LOL, but is there something better than that?

Did the overheat warning horn not sound ???____I think it is already too late.---Have you ever tested the overheat warning horn?
