I really like this 36 Hatteras

I really like this 36 Hatteras express hull down the road but know literally nothing about DD 671 ti's. Aside from hiring a surveyor where can I learn more about these engines amd what should I look for in their evals?
TIA Randy

I can tell you that because the Navy used these engines, you can purchase a long block for $2000.00 out of Boats and Harbors, that parts can be found around the world. The design is almost 40 years old but still seeing service. Finding a mechanic is getting harder. And the fact that their ti's puts more strain on them. Oil samples work only if you have two separte samples at different times. Two points make a line, and describe a condition. If a condition is gross one oil sample may point it out, but I never get to upset about just one sample. To often test comes back looking bad and its just not true. Find a good mechanic who knows DD 671's, I can tell by hearing them run their general condition, he can as well. From there test can be done. If they hunt for an steady rpm at idle you have governor problem and this can mean a poorly maintained engine. Lots of clues about these engine condition just need to find a local guy to help you."

Thanks for the responses. They

Thanks for the responses. They make good sense and exactly what I was looking for. I understand the value of finding a good mechanic (someone who knows the engines more than just nuts and bolts). I like the thought of finding someone who can identify a problem just by listening. Coupled with real factory DD training how can you go wrong. I like the notion that these engines have penetrated deeply in the marine diesel engine market. If I can get a long block for $2K it makes cost of ownership more acceptible.

I really like this Express hull. Your responses might be just enough to encourage me to explore futher. Randy

"Have 6-71 low block that needs a shot to start in morning, and runs good,no smoke out the exhust,or blow by signs, but has small leaks between the head and block that look clear like raw diesel, with a litle lube oil.. had the head blolts checked, and they were all up to specks. Is it time for head work? or more? Thanks"
