" I was given a 115 hp Mercury

" I was given a 115 hp Mercury Outboard 1984(?). I know nothing about it, but was told it starts. I would like to sell it, but to get a fair price I need to get it running.

I have hooked it up to a battery and it turns over, my question involves the fuel tank. It is the type that has the one line running from a remote tank with a primer bulb. There is another hole on top of the tank with an approximate 1/2 rubber hose running off, I would presume that would be to the vent. Does this need to be sealed tight in order for the fuel to get into the line or is this supposed to be open?

Like I said I know nothing about getting it started, so would appreciate any advice. I can't find any type of fuel shut off switch. I also do have the hose hooked up to the intake on the prop.

Thanks for any help.

" good News, I got the motor s

" good News, I got the motor started, but I only ran it for about 30 seconds. Next question, my friend told me it was a straight fuel mix, but I have my doubts, I can't find any type of oil fill, which leads me to believe it must be a mixture, right? This is a 6 cylinder, and appears to have 4 carbs, so is this a 2stroke or 4 stroke or how do I tell?

I'm completely lost obviously! Thanks "

i is a 2 stroke motor. I doubt that i has a oil resevior. I think it was made several years before that technology. The mixture ratio will be 50:1 or 16 ounces of oil to 6 gal gas. waht gas did you use to start it the first time??????. hopefully gas that was mixed with oil!

Make sure you are starting it

Make sure you are starting it in water or with a pair of ear muffs to supply water to cool engine while running it.
