How to replace the Shift Shaft Assembly

I've got a 1982 40 Hp Mercury 2-stroke that need the Shift Shaft Assembly replaced. How in the heck do I go about this. I have the new part, is there a way to just remove the top metal linkage piece and replace that, as that's all thats broken?
