I have a 1968 55hp evinrude electric shift I' have a problem not having forward, I've found small shavings when i drained the oil. I think my problem is in the gear case somewhere, but having trouble getting the gear housing to slide out? I need some guidence in the right direction please help...

I am not going to get into why you shouldnt drop the lower,Some others that know this motor will walk you through the procedure to test without removing. You should wait for their replies. One I believe altho I get mixed up between hydro, elect and another but I think when not running the motor defaults to Forward,Try turning the prop by hand,Make sure you wont start the motor! key off batt.disconnected

There is one bolt hidden under the trim tab.--------so 6 bolts altogether and it should come off.--------------Let us know your level of expertise.-------------I am now a bit afraid of coaching , as some folks do not like a straight forward appraoch.

I do have some know how, I always do my own water pumps in this and my bigger boat this is my run about, I do my own winterizing and electical work until I hit a speed bump ! Now I told you a little about my expertise not a professional but I do the best I can, it saves money from paying shop fees.------------Now I will start from the begining at the wiring harness in reverse I have power to blue and green, In neutral power to green, and in foward no power to either.. Now with engine running I have reverse, nuetral prop turns slightly, and in forward prop act as if in nuetral.-----Next I checked the lower unit oil it was low and showed signs of water and small chunkes and shavings of metal. So I took the lower unit off, have the seliniod out and water pump out.---- But do not no how to get the gear houseing out so I can inspect it. Can you give me some insight how to do this or should I button it back up and take it to the shop. Would it be wiser to look for another lower unit?

Go to the parts breakdown here:

Remove the screws holding the prop shaft bearings, and pull it out. You may need some heat if corroded.
Then remove the big clip-rings and reverse gear.
Remove pinion nut and pull up driveshaft.
If pinion is stuck on driveshaft, keep the nut on the shaft, but down flush with the end. Place a big flat screwdriver or similar between the clutch-dog and nut, give the shaft a knock UP. Normally the pinion gets loose.
Then just keep on until you have it all out.
