"I am looking for advice on ta

"I am looking for advice on taking the leg off a evinrude 40hp 1980. Need to replace water pump and just want to make sure nothing is going to spring out or even if there is a special way or tool i should use.
Or if there is common trouble with this sort of motor, eg crossing thread or breaking off parts.

"I cannot find a 40hp listed for 1980. Nothing between 1976 and 1983. What is its model number?

You won't have to take the leg off just the gear case. 5 or 6 bolts. The waterpump is located on the top of it.
You will have to disconnect the shift rod at some place depending upon model. Most probably a joint accessible once the gearcase has been lowered a little in the models up to 1983 but from its top end in models from 84 onwards.


The bolts may be difficult to undo.

The drive shaft may be stuck in the crankshaft at the top.

Once you have the correct year you should be able to find an exploded parts diagram that may be useful in THE BRP PARTS CATALOG

Just discovered that you are in Australia 40 hp could have been made in Australia in 1980. If so I guess it will be simliar to the models produced elsewhere in the 1970s. The models from 84 onwards are totally different"
