How To Determine Shaft Length

I'm considering changing out my 89 70hp Johnson with a 00 70hp Johnson. I see the newer motor claims to have a 20" shaft. How do I determine the shaft length of my current motor?

Thanks,
John

Measure from the underside of the transom brackets... the portion that would normally sit upon the top of the transom, down to the cavitation plate that exists just above the propeller.

In the area of:
15" = Short shaft
20" = Long shaft
25" = Extra long shaft

Does anyone know how to decipher shaft length from early (1970’s) 70 hp engines ? Same year and HP end with a (2) or a (3). And significant weight differences (under 210 # to 230 #}. Replacing a 1970 60hp and trying to stay close to 208#.
Thanks
