how to clean a piston?

ok my powerhead is split and crank is removed. what can i use to clean up the pistons?

Carbon ( black stuff ) can be cleaned off with a wire brush.

Is there a specific solvent I can use?

Nothing that is 'legal' today!
Look for an 'old' backyard mech with an old naphtha based parts cleaning tank.

Dry Cleaning Fluid..........From your local dry cleaners of course.

what about carb cleaner or parts cleaner?

You can use Seafoam to soak gummed up parts. The MSDS for Seafoam states it is 40%-60% pale oil (thin, purified petroleum), 25%-35% Naptha, and the remainder is Isopropyl Alcohol.

If you buy a 1 gallon can you can pour it into a sealable container and soak your parts in there.
