How to check electronic choke is running on a 40

My engine cranks, but

My engine cranks, but doesn't start easily at all. After checking fueling and sparks, the only way I was able to get it started was to squirt fuel directly into the carb whilst it was set to fast idle & someone was cranking it. Once started it runs perfectly which to me suggests the choke is at fault.
The engine has had quite an expensive service recently, so I suspect the problem might lie with the quicksilver control box I use rather that the engine itself.

How can I check that the electronic choke is working? I have access to a multimeter, etc, but I'm not too sure what I'm looking for under the casing!

The choke has a

The choke has a black button on the bottom that can be used if the electric fails. You see that small valve near the fuel pump with the wire leads? Thats it. And small tubes. There should be 12 volts on that yellow wire when the key is pushed down.

"OK, that was certainly it. No click and no 12V across the choke solenoid. The control box must wired incorrectly as the engine then continued to run once we had removed the key!!!
Does anyone have a wiring diagram for one of these things? Taking it apart, it looks like everything is wired up OK (coloured wires match up), so I'm a little confused. I've attached an image of the model we have....

It the engine continued to run

It the engine continued to run than somthing may not be grounded. Probably the big plug in the motor is little corroded. I would start there. Clean that up and spread the pins a little.

The wires go:
Red/purple:fused hot
purple:key on +
yellow/red:starter
red/yellow:choke
DON'T PUT POWER HERE:
***black/yellow:ign stop
***black:ground
