How to adjust shift linkage

"hello, i have a 2001 sig 300

"hello, i have a 2001 sig 300 chaparral with twin engins when i go to shift my port engine into gear sometimes it doesn't go into gear or shifts hard. Sometimes it will rev up then shift really hard. how do i adjust this?? Please Help"

"First, you should never rev-up the engine and then shift. That's looking for trouble, as you will get hard shifting. The first thing you should do is set the engine idle speed correctly, and the second one is to verify the adjustment of the shift cable linkage. Also, if the shift cable is stiff, replace it, they are not expensive (around $30)."

thanks for the reply. I don't rev it up it just doesn't engage and when it does the engine engages at a higher RPM. You can't rev the engine in netral on these engines. how hard is it to replace the shift cables and do you then have to ajust them to take out the slack? the boat is a 2001 bought new in 03 and had only 94 hours on it when i bought so it sat alot.
