How to add a tach

"i have a 1974 evinrude 50 horse. my boat had a dead 50 horse mercury on it when i bought it, and only a empty hole where the tach used to be. i am wanting to add a tach back to it, but was wondering is there any special type of tach i need and how i would need to go about wiring it to my engine.

I believe that the signal for

I believe that the signal for the tach can be found in the control box for the engine. OMC markets tachometers; I would suggest that at minimum you find a tach intended for outboard marine use. I'm not sure that a tach intended for automotive use would work.
