"Me again- re: my johnson fd-15 18hp motor
My shear pin broke recently and I am troubleshooting why, as my blades didnt hit anything when it stopped working. How should I be shifting from neutral to drive, drive to reverse, etc etc. I have been leaving it at full throttle and shifting, should i be throttleing down and then shifting, also should I start in gear or in neutral
Thanks for your help again guys

"Start in neutral.

Always shift at the slowest rpm possible without stalling the engine. If going from forward to reverse or vise versa, it's usually best to pause briefly.

In addition to what Dan says a

In addition to what Dan says about reducing the revs to the minimum possible and pausing briefly in neutral the gear should be engaged smartly not gently as with a dog clutch that will round of the corners of the dogs and so that eventually it will not stay in gear.

If you have been shifting at WOT no wonder you have broken the shear pin. It's lucky you have not broken a whole lot else.

what do you mean engaged smart

what do you mean engaged smartly not gently? I am glad you brought this up because right before the pin broke it would pop out of gear from time to time that same day. Please clarify if you could! thanks!

With the engine at idle speed

With the engine at idle speed a quickish movement of the selector from the neutral position to the forward or reverse position. Like operating a switch for example.

"What VICS is saying is right

"What VICS is saying is right on. Don't ease it into gear causing grinding, etc. and clutch dog damage. When shifting slow the RPMs down as slow as possible without killing the engine then shift. The twist grip on the tiller should have a mark on it labled SHIFT. Use it or just go as far as possilbe without killing the motor.
