How much work involved in replacing engine block?

Replacing the engine block on a 5.0L V8 Merc 305 and my question(s) would be...

How hard is this to do? What's all involved?
How to disconnect drive from motor?
Steering? Need to remove?

How many hours would be involved to do all the work.

Plan on getting the engine block and having a friend do the work...

is the block cracked?your talking a major rebuild.also depends on how good the replacement block is.will it be new?short or long block?

The block is cracked. It did start and run pretty well. The replacement block is newer and it's a short block. I plan on using all the existing components, exhaust manifolds, etc. Simply just replacing the engine block. Or hoping to anyways....

Hi there,
If you are asking "How to remove the drive", I would suspect you have very little hands on experience....that being said, I would highly recommend that you pick up a shop manual, read it carefully, look at your engine while reading and then decide if this is something you still want to tackle. It is a big job that requires some basic knowledge. Good Luck with it!

my boat 97 baja 350 v-8 boat medic swaped out my motor with long block swapped every thing over, charged me 16 hrs @ 70.00 per hr. he has 25+ yrs on boats, so do the math see what u think! also changed lower shift cable. good luck thought i would throw that in,

The boat itself is in great condition for being 22 years old. Has always been garage kept, no tears in the seats etc. VERY clean boat and from what I'm told, somewhat rare as well. Really hoping to have it back on the water here in the Chicago burbs for next spring.

to save yourself a lot of trouble later on,I would take a few pistons and mains caps out of the new block and get the bore and crank measured and checked over to see if its any good.strip the oil pump and inspect it.check the cam and timing gears, put a straight edge across the faces of the blockand give it a good check over.any good history of it?also double check that the parts are going to interchange.youll need tools,ie torque wrench, engine stand, etc, etc,.you may need to machine the faces of the manifolds, then get the heads checked for cracks and warpage.valve guide wear, loose valve seats, soft valve springs, stuck lifters, etc,Because if you dont get everything checked over, youll do all that work and find problems later, when its in the boat.thoroughly benchtest the motor before you put it back in,oil pressure check etc.also pre fill the oil filter with oil before you fit it
