"2 stroke or 4 stroke?

A two stroke at that age will potentially sell for 750-1000 bucks in a private sale if it was well cared for and nearly cosmetically perfect. A dealer would want somewhat more.

6/8/9.9/15 horse motors hold their value considerably better than their larger counterparts. Last year I sold a 21 year old 9.9 for over 700 dollars - the price was considered reasonable.

A four stroke may well sell in the same range but I would insist on an inspection from a Marine Tech and proof that all scheduled maintenance had been performed on it thus far.

Four strokes are not forgiving of complacency when it comes to maintenance. Additionally, a 4 stroke in this horsepower will be a single cylinder and will suffer from a "perceived" poor idle no matter what you do to it - a single cylinder 4 stroke "shakes like a wet dog on a very cold day"
- most people who have never experienced their operation are very disappointed with their performance."
