How much is it worth?

Hi there is an auction coming up this weekend here and one of the items is a 60s mercury 39 3.9 hp outboard engine. There is no way of knowing if it runs or not but when i went down and looked at it today it seemed to be in good shape and has good compression. The gear shift does work. It also comes with a small fuel tank and hose. My question is how much is it worth? I am looking to put it on my 1970 17ft fiberform for a trolling motor I think it would be about right for that.
 
how would i check to see if it has spark? pull the spark plug out and pull the starter cord and see if it has spark? How much is one of these worth if it is indeed running? What about if it isn't running?
 
Don't get caught up in the frenzy of the auction and pay more than it's worth...it's a 60s recylable worth about 2 cents/pound. Autioneers will post a bid bumper in the crowd...usually the property owner...to jack up the price if not many peoplle are bidding on it. I saw that once when I tried to buy a used pickup. Since I was the only bidder the owner kept bumping the price on me. I left.

There are too many used outboard engines on the market...let this one pass and seek another one that can be tested.
