How much hp can a Cobra take

"I bare my soul on the altar of the marine Gods!

This is a 1990 Four Winns 220 Horizon, 5.7 Chevy, 260 hp. It has a Cobra od with about 400 hrs on it. We are replacing the seized longblock and for a few bucks more can go to 383 stroker (300 hp) or even a 330 hp? Both are marine 350 engines, built by pros. The extra torque would be handy for skiing and giddy-up, but am I asking for trouble from the Cobra?"

For a regular Cobra I wouldn't be going much over the 260hp. OMC had built a beefier version in the late 80's early 90's for the big blocks (460/454). But to go above that 260 range today with an older used Cobra I think your asking for trouble.

"I agree with Bob, unless you have the beafier King Cobra designed for the 460/454 you are not going to be happy. I run a King Cobra mated to a 460 ford big block and even that has turned a set of gears. I change to a 5 deg set and have had no trouble since but I do not believe yours is capable of taking the extra torque. I defer to Bob since he has a lot moe experience than I do with different setups."
