How hard is a b86 Johnson 40 HP rebuild

" The boat dealer that looked at my motor said my lower cylinder is scored badly and I need a rebuild. He wants $1400 to do it. I am going to try to rebuild it myself, but just want to know if there's any tricks or common problems I might run into. I can get the cylinders professionally bored for under $100, and I am looking to buy the new pistons, rings, and powerhead gasket kit, but is there anything else I will need? Thanks. "

If you haven t done one of these before I would strongly recommend a workshop manual....

" Yeah, I forgot to mention that. I will definitely be using a shop manual. I just wanted to be sure I wasn't biting off more than I could chew. I've heard the powerhead's might have a trick to getting them in/out or putting in the gaskets. Is this true? "
