i know this might be a stupid question but i have an issue with my 48 hp johnson. it bogges intermittenly at higher speeds. then picks up then boggs again. there is a piece on the stbd side of the outboard that has a red lever i believe its the choke solenoid that has an adjustment. anyways the red lever broke and fuel was coming out of there. i replaced the broken piece and it still does it intermittenly. i had the carbs done in jan and used the boat well over 100 times ever since. has not been sitting. can carbs get dirty that fast? just wondering

thanks

"Depends... How clean is your fuel? Do you have a fuel filter? Is there rust in your fuel tank? Where do you buy your fuel? How good is the fuel? Usually tho, for the carbs to get gummed up it would take a few months of non use with the carbs about half full of fuel. If there is debris in your fuel that is getting into the carbs then it won't take long at all for the supply to be choked off. If you have a fuel filter then check that it ain't dirty. How clean is the fuel pick-up in the tanke?"

well my fuel is clean i use the lowest octane fuel i believe its the 87 there is no rust in my tank because1 i have an external tank that is plastic and i remove off the boat and store in my garage. the tank is spotless clean on the inside. the longest that ive let the boat sit is 1 week there is a fuel filter and i have not checked it yet. ive had the boat since december and the previous owner said he did carbs in december. the boat ran fine but i dont know if its time for a new carb job or should i check something else

"ALWAYS go over the carbs.. Taking the previous owners word can be costly. Ya don't know if he is telling the truth or if he even knows what he is doing. It does not take much gunk in the carb to mess things up. just a bit in the main just can be enough to make them be 3 or 4 sizes too small which may not seem too noticable but can lean it out enough to burn up your motor. When I bought my boat and motor I went through the carbs. changed my fuel lines. Installed inline filter, checked pick-up in tank, checked compression and spark. Also installed new plugs...Always Remember: BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY."
