How do you split upper and lower units on Merc 110, 9.8 hp

I'm trying to remove the top at the lower cowling and driveshaft housing joint. I have non running '73 7.5 and '74 9.8 with a seized swivel. It looks like it's held on by 6 nuts on studs in the block down the sides and a screw at the back from the top. I've removed these and hammered on the studs to push up. I used a UHMW block so not to damage anything. It didn't budge. Am I missing a bolt ?

The swivel is truly seized. I used a heat lamp on it for 24 hours, I didn't want to burn the paint if I could get it to move,,and couple of 5' levers . If I got even a tiny wiggle, I could work it free. It didn't budge either. Even stubborn old fools do give up. Besides I have a working one on the 7.5 , if I can split it.

I'ld appreciate any help

First of all, put that phillips screw in the back, back in or you'll separate more than you need to (and require two base gaskets).

One of two things is happening here: Either the driveshaft is rusted solidly into the crank end, or you need to do a bit of wedging. Take a large, regular screw driver and pry up on the two forward studs--that tends to break 'em free. Hanging the entire motor from the power head and shaking the hell out of it also helps.

Good luck.

Jeff

PS: I had one of those where the driveshaft would NOT come out of the crank, even with heat on it (we had chopped the driveshaft off to remove the power head). Hope that's not the case here.

Thank you about the hint on the screw. By doing that, I'll even give it a swat or two with a urethane dead blow, will I get the lower cowling to come with the powerhead.? I've already pulled the lower unit off, so I'm lucky there.

Good! Some maniac must have used an adhesive sealer on the PH gasket.

Be sure to try the screw driver pry trick on those front studs first. That usually works.
