How do you remove an expansion plug

i know that its probably dumb

i know that its probably dumb but i dont know how and i dont understand why i have one if on my 68 omc my ball gear and drive shaft are one.
further more how do i get the retainer seal off the drive shaft . there seems to be a large lobe on the shaft that it wont slide over

Are you referring to a block expansion plug? Those are usually removed by punching through with a screwdriver and prying them out. A screw type slide hammer is more scientific.
