how do you check a Trigger Base Adjustable Linkage??

hi i like to know how do you check the proper length of the Trigger Base Linkage to the throttle... most are fixed linkage not adjustable but on my engine here its adjustable and it had the stop nut loose...

my question is how do i check that it is in the right position since i still havign engine problems and i think you need to set the Trigger alignment first before you can do the timming

also a manual wont help as i been told by mercury that procedure is not in the manual.. still waiting to hear back from my marina

oh its that 40hp 402 engine i been working in in a couple posts.
as mercury cant help said its not in the service manual how to properly set the alignment of trigger linkage...
thats always great lol
