How do we know when the Mixture is set correctly

While trolling down the lake, I began to wonder about how long this thing will continue running this well. Murphy brings those things up when there is absolutly no reason for it.

When we set the mixture screw to:
"in till it coughs, out till it runs raggedy, then put the screw in the middle"

What other way can we tell if the mixture is set right?
Is there such a thing as an Exhaust gas analyzer for outboards?
Is it even critical enough to worry about?"

no EGA for outboards that i'm aware of.......maybe in california....or at the factory for testing new ones for the EPA.if your eng runs good..dont worry about it..

"Well, persuing this thread to a fault...After trolling along at an idle for nearly half hour, if I pulled a plug would you expect it to be wet and sooty or or dry and light brown.
This is a 25 Hp two stroke with electronic ignition."
