How do I remove throttle/gear lever from trim?

I am trying to remove my starboard interior trim panel, on which is mounted the throttle/gear lever for my Mercruiser MPI 350. The plywood in the trim panel has disintegrated (9 years old) because rain has leaked inside. I have undone all the bolts holding the throttle/gear lever mount onto the panel but it still seems to be held in place. I can't see any obvious way of releasing the throttle/gear lever but I don't want to try force if there might be some release mechanism. There are no relevant diagrams or advice in the motor installation manual. Any suggestions, please?

It has been about ten years but I seem to remember there is an allen type set screw on the bottom side of the shift/throttle lever. The lever must pull straight away from the panel. You may need to remove a thin cover on the lever itself to disconnect the wiring inside the lever. Take pictures and mark the lever and control w/an arrow for up orientation. Do the same for the contoller.

Depends on the control. There might be a screw under a piece of plastic smack in the middle of the control to get the handle off.

We need a pic to tell you exactly what you have and how to get the handle off.
