how do I disconnect shift shaft on Merc 25

shift shaft is covered all the way from top to bottom

No model / serial posted , but here is one way to do it.-----Look inside the cowling.----Look below the carburetor on the starboard side-----Shift the motor and see the linkage move.------------Removing an electric starter may help you.-------------Linkage swings out of the way I believe.

Is this your 1999 25 hp? If it is racer is correct ,disconnects behind the carb and if you have electric start the starter needs to come off. You also need to account for the washer at the top of the shift shaft.
