How do I control speed

"Hello guys I am new to the board. And I am new to boats and outboard motors. I recently purchased a boat and it came with a 1990 Evinrude 4hp 2cylinder motor. My problem is that I do not know how to control the speed on the motor. It has a lever on the right side of the ending, a lever on the top of the engine which I assume is the choke, and 2 turn knobs on the front. I do now know what any of these controls do and I do not know how to control the speed. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. Also I wanted to add that I have looked everywhere local for a repair manual for the motor as I am sure it would answer my questions but I cannot find one. I guess Im going to have to order one online.

Thanks for the help in advance."

"Is this real question, or an April Fool's joke?

The throttle is usually on the tiller handle. Twist the whole handle. The lever you mentioned is probably the gear shift F/N/R. Does the motor run?

If you are that naive, you probably take a boater safety course before going onto the water, or at least buy some insurance.

Good Luck"

"Yes Buddy it is a real question.

And the problem is that there is nothing to "twist" there is no twist throttle on the tiller hand. Therein lies my problem . I dont understand where else the throttle or speed control would be.

And dont try to talk down to me or act like I am niave without having the full facts. I do believe that this is a message board and people post problems here to be helped. Obviously you were never taught to be courteous. And If you feel that the question was that far beneath you, you shouldnt have answered it.

And one last thought if you are going to critcize people who ask for help them maybe you shouldnt be on a message board full of people asking questions. Thanks for nothing. You have a nice day.

Oh and yes the motor does run. It starts up first pull and idles perfectly."

"THhe throttle is on top off

"THhe throttle is on top off the cowelling, pulling it toward you will speed up the engine. The lever on the side is your gear shifter, pulling toward you is forward, remember lever position pointing strait up is neutral. There isn't a reverse position for this engine I don't beleive. To go reverse you must rotate the engine 180 degrees. The two knobs in front off the engine are as follows,The one you pull on is the choke and the one you turn is your needle valve.Hope this is the info you need, get familliar with all operating procedures and practise safe boating."

Thanks for the help Jim. I checked and you are right on all counts. I really appreciated. And I did sign up for a boating safety course which is in May. Once again Thanks for the help bud
