How do I adjust the Cam Follower? 1990 60 hp

I think I de-adjusted my sync linkage for carburetors with the Cam follower.

This is on 1970 Johnson 60 HP 3-cyl.

There's just one mark on the Cam Follower plate. Were is it supposed to be pointing when the warm up lever is on "RUN" position?

According to the manual it says that it needs to point to the center of the cam roller, but it doesn't specify if it's when warm-up lever is in "Run" or "Start" position. Which makes a difference because if lever is in "Run" (lowered) position then there is a gap of 1/16" between the Cam Follower plate and the roller itself (i.e. I cannot make the Cam Follower plate physically touch the surface of the roller). But when the lever is in "Start" position then the mark is truly pointing the center of the roller and they touch.

Can anybody give some input on this please?

The problem that I'm having is that the motor has a hard time transitioning from Idle to 1/2 Throttle, most of the time it cuts off and dies. But works 100% fine in neutral and in gear in low RPMs and also in Hi RPMs once the can be reached.

Re: How do I adjust the Cam Follower?

There is a regular screwdriver slot screw that secures the throttle cam roller. This is the adjustment area. Simply adjust the throttle cam roller so that the scribe mark on the cam just touches the roller (throttle buterflies start to open) when it is dead center with the roller. Do not be concerned with the various throttle position settings.

If you've actually changed the linkage on the engine between the metal cam and the engine's linkage, that is another matter. Did you?

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay store at:

Re: How do I adjust the Cam Follower?

Joe, thank you for your reply.

No, I did not disturb the previous setting of the Throttle Lever linkage, it's still in its original position as it worked previously.

The only things that I might have changed were:
- carburetor throttle butterfly syncing linkages when I was restoring the carbs;
- and also I messed around with that roller screw that you are mentioning. See, the book says to have that cam scribe mark to be dead center with the roller. Well, but that is a problem - if I try to make it dead center with the roller then the cam will not be touching the roller (1/16" gap) as the butterflies are fully closed.

But what you are saying makes sense. If I adjust the roller so that if it just touches the cam then the mark appears to be pointing to the top surface of the roller, and yes, the butterflies start to open as the mark aligns with the dead center of the roller as I advance the throttle lever forward.

So, is this the correct setting? Hoping so - I will take this thing to the lake today-tomorrow as the time and weather permit.

Many thanks, Joe, for your support. I will let you know how it works out.

Re: How do I adjust the Cam Follower?

You say "if I try to make it dead center with the roller then the cam will not be touching the roller (1/16" gap) as the butterflies are fully closed."

Then you say "If I adjust the roller so that if it just touches the cam then the mark appears to be pointing to the top surface of the roller, and yes, the butterflies start to open as the mark aligns with the dead center of the roller as I advance the throttle lever forward."

The above confuses me somewhat. Loosening the locking screw of the throttle cam roller should easily allow you to align the center of the roller dead center with the scribe mark of the cam (touching).

Re: How do I adjust the Cam Follower?

Maybe my illustration might help understand the described.

Ok, (of course loosen the screw), if aligning the roller's dead center with the mark on the cam then the roller has to be moved away from the cam because of the way the roller's aligning plate is made so. The roller cannot be moved just straight up, the groove is directed North - East when the butterflies are closed.

Are you implying that something else is un-adjusted?

Re: How do I adjust the Cam Follower?

The throttle must be advanced somewhat in order for the cam scribe mark to align dead center with the roller.

It sounds like you may be trying to align the roller with the throttle set at a dead idle.

Re: How do I adjust the Cam Follower?

Yes. This is actually what I described in one of my previous posts.

"If I adjust the roller so that if it just touches the cam then the mark appears to be pointing to the top surface of the roller, and yes, the butterflies start to open as the mark aligns with the dead center of the roller as I advance the throttle lever forward."

Great, so to finalize this,- the mark on the cam (with the throttle in dead IDLE) should be pointing somewhere above the dead CENTER of the roller and the roller should be TOUCHING the cam (no gap), but it (the mark) should be pointing to the dead CENTER of the roller with the throttle somewhat advanced and as the butterflies start to open.

This is also the same condition with the warm up lever as I understand it now. As I lift the lever up to the START / WARM-UP position the butterflies just start to open and the cam mark at this point is aligned with the dead CENTER of the roller.

Whew. Finished. Please, Joe, say I got it correctly?

Re: How do I adjust the Cam Follower?

You state "This is also the same condition with the warm up lever as I understand it now. As I lift the lever up to the START / WARM-UP position the butterflies just start to open and the cam mark at this point is aligned with the dead CENTER of the roller."

BINGO! You are correct.
