How about long shaft to short shaft

Not really.---Need a short driveshaft.--Short shift rod or coupling.-----Cut 5" off water tube.---------Now the lower unit may have to come apart as the pinion gear / shaft has a woodruff key in it.-----------Ask for instructions to remove lower unit if you go ahead with this.

Thanks for the reply racerone. Just found this site a few days ago, lots of knowledgable folks on here. Probably be doing some "brain picking" on here from time to time!
I probably will make the conversion to a short shaft since it's not too difficult. I ordered a service manual off this site yesterday, will it have any info on the conversion?

Some of the work will depend on how it left the factory too.----If it was changed to long shaft later it will likely have the long $$$ shift rod coupler.

Look on craigs list for a cheap short shaft then all you need to do is cut the water tube. you can use a variety of years and hp I believe?

Is their a chart anywhere that tells which models are interchangable? Am I safe to assume that Evinrudes of the same years are interchangable with Johnsons?

Many years will interchange.---But that also depends on whether your motor is still factory original.-----------But any lower unit from say 1965 to 79 will interchange as a complete assembly.----Internal parts may be slightly different so you would have to change out the entire assembly.
