Hourmeter problem

The hourmeter on the starboard engine stopped at 999 hours. But it is a 5 digit meter, (mechanical wheel not digital) is it possible if I buy a new one to set the hours to the actual hours?

Why? Just add 1000... the math is pretty straightforward.

I have changed a few where they came with a foil sticker for the face and a spot left of the digits that says "________ +"
you write the old hours on the line.

most hour meters can be easily spun up or down...the wheels kind of slide a bit so you can unmesh the gears and wheel them to any value you want. You might be able to fix your old one. Maybe someone already "adjusted" it once and didn't remesh the 4th wheel.

When I replace hour meter on my garden tractor, I just connected a std wall plug type 12 VDC power adapter to it for the hours the old one showed. Plugged it into outlet on my desk and then unplugged it after 425 hours (17 1/2 days), then installed the hour meter into the tractor..

In your case, that would be 23 days for the 999 hours....

The only way that I'd know of to change the reading for a wind-down-clock-works hour meter, would be to remove the bezel and gain access to the tumblers, and manipulate them.
This is not worth doing, IMO.

Here's a thought!
Install two new fresh hour meters at the helm.
Take the previous hour meters, and install them underneath the helm and leave them disconnected.
Make note of the date and hours in your log book.
You'll have the data needed for periodic maintenance, and if the total hours are needed, do the math like suggested.

When/if you were to sell the boat, this will be easily explainable to a new owner.
