I have a 2002 merc 15 hp 2 str

I have a 2002 merc 15 hp 2 stroke motor. It runs HOT. I replaced the waterpump (not sure it's correct) still gets very hot almost to the point of steam. Took out the thermostat. no difference. In a pail I am getting air bubbles from the pickup port. Could I have put the impeller backwards?

"If the drive shaft is not rotated clockwise whilst positioning the pump housing over the new impeller, the vanes may by laying back the wrong direction. I assume you re-installed the impeller key correctly?"
