I just noticed that my 2005 merc 25hp 2 stroke discharges very hot water(can't hold my hand under it - 160 degrees according to kitchen thermometer) when under way (tell tale stream is only warm when idling at the dock or on muffs) I never checked this before but only decided to feel the water while under way after I saw steam coming off the water that was discharging out of tell tale. There is a very good stream and it is steady. I decided to put in new water pump as motor was 2 yrs old. The old water impeller was in excellent condition. I also put in new thermostat. Water still discharges hot when under way. I felt the exhaust plate & heads around the spark plugs. These only get warm. Does this sound like a overheating problem or normal? I would appreciate some expert advice as I am stumped & nervous about using the motor. Thanks !

"It does seem kind of hot coming out. It sounds like you did the right changs, pump and stats. As long as the heads dont feel overly hot you should be ok. Just monitor with your temp gauge or make sure the Alarm is working correclty"

"Thanks for responding. The hot water out of the tell tale concerns me but someone told me that it can be very warm to hot since the tell tail is driven off the T stat. Unfortunately this motor does not have an alarm & no temp gauge (tiller motor) I guess that I will need to keep feeling the heads. Being a novice & not by any means any type of mechanic, can you tell me exactly where on the heads I should be touching ?"
