Hose inside gas tank broke

"I have two 6.6 gallon Mercury

"I have two 6.6 gallon Mercury gas tanks that are made of the red plastic, aproximatley 20 years old, used on my 25 HP Mercury...
I had a problem that left me stranded last week because the fuel pickup hose broke inside the tank at the barbed fitting...

Today I went looking for a replacement hose 1/2" OD and 3/8" ID, it looks like it is made of clear vinyl hose similar to that Home Dopot sells, except it has turned brownish color over the years but still pliable except the upper end where it crumbled at the barbed fitting...

The question I have is, is it safe to use tubing from Home Depot for this application in gasoline, or is Mercury using some special hose material for this application???
By the way there is a plastic filter that slips over the other end that is still in great shape and can still be used...

I did call my local Mercury dealer and they can order a new hose 6-3/4" long with a new filter for aprox. $23.00, I would need two of them because I would assume the other gas tank is going to fail also...

I can't seem to find a Mercury part number for this hose/filter.

I hate to spend $50.00 for two hoses w/filters, but if I have to I will....

Yes I was thinking about going this route using a rubber gas line, the only problem is the wall thickness is much thicker, I won't be able to use the filter that was originally used on the end of original line.
I suppose it isn't that critical, there is another filter before the carburator...

Cut your tube where it is flexible,attach to barb,cut tube in center insert some 3/8 bore brake line into the tube to bring to required length add the piece of tube with the filter and you still got the filter.And if there is a chance of the gas reacting with the copper brake line ,I'm sure someone will jump on me PDQ.

PS I used this method my self to replace my fuel lines on my motor. I replaced the lines completely but used the brake line where it inserts into the pumps and carbs."

I found some gas line at a local marine store, it is 5/16" ID and 1/2" OD that worked out perfect, just under $5.00 for 2 feet. I was able to even get the filter on the end of line, I made the line 2.5" longer so the filter is laying down even with the bottom of tank, the hose has a natural curve to it from being coiled up. I was able to get the hose on the barbed fitting even though it was slightly under-size.

I also redid my other gas tank, it's a good thing, it fell apart also, hose had broken at the barbed fitting just like the other one...

While I was at the marine store I saw a new product made by Stabil it is blue in color and is supposed to treat gasoline that has Ethnol (sp?) in it, in order to stop the corosive effect of todays gasoline... I wonder if it is any good or should I stick with the traditional red Stabil we have used for many years???

I dont know if they still hand

I dont know if they still handle it but a no of years ago you could get clere gas line at auto parts stores for race caars mite try
