Hooking up tackhmeter.

Have a 1975 model 200 20HP mercury engine need help with installing a O.M.C. tach. to this engine. It's a Alternator Tack from Gale Products out of Galesburg, Ill. it's old but good unit. it has one gray wire coming out of tach. Instructions are to hook gray wire to non-regulated output side of alternator. Ground terminal (black wire) to ground (motor).

There should be two wires,yellow with a red stripe coming from the stator.The gray wire is attached to either of these at the rectifier.Have you electric or manual start?
 
Yes it has electrec start, don't see a rectifier. There is a blue and red wires from switch box to stator, has a white and brown wires from trigger to switch box there is also a orange wire from switch box, this wire goes to terminal block along with the the ornge lead in engine harness. Hope this helps.
 
http://www.maxrules.com/oldmercs/Wiring/1966ona/20.pdf Have a look at this,I got the wire colours from the stator wrong,on bigger motors the stator wires are usually yellow with red stripe.
The brown wire is the tach signal wire.It seems to go back to the salmon wire,which is usually the kill wire.Is there a rubber plug on the front of the control box? If there is all you need to do is get a tach wiring harness and plug it in.Brown,sig. White +. Black= gnd.
If it is the other system,you'll need to locate the brown which will be taped off somewhere. Take a jumper from the live side of the white to the stop switch to the + pole on the tach,and a grnd from the battery to the neg.
 
Thank you for the advise I think I can make it work now. Yes it has a tac. plug on the control handle, but will not be using the remote control system. But with your help I know where to go now. Once again thanks.
