I have a 1997 Honda bf8a and I

I have a 1997 Honda bf8a and I have removed 5 bolts so far on the leg but am unable to see where to disconnect the shift rod. I want to change the impeller. I have Seloc on-line manual but does not show or say where to disconnect shift rod. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

There should be a clevis pin t

There should be a clevis pin through the fork at top of shift rod and hole in shift shaft bell crank.

This is held by a cotter pin and you may need to remove bolt holding finned rectifier
for room to slide the clevis pin out.

"Ok, good. Thanks. I now have the cotter pin and the clevis pin removed. Now the lower unit drops out about 2 ft. but it stops in the center swivel section by a rubber grommet because of the thicker fork piece that attaches in the top section with the clevis pin."

"I would have thought two feet

"I would have thought two feet would be ample clearance for water pump access. Verticle Driveshaft is a spline fit at top and square slide fit over lower pinion shaft.

You can just unscrew that top fork piece and remove it from the shift rod, count the half turns for easier adjustment when reinstalling it.

The Shop Manual suggests turning all the way in and then unscrewing 4 and 1/2 turns. Then with both lower unit and shift in forward gear. make sure the clevis pin holes align for reinstall."

"Thank you, Adrian & Rose and Pilotart.
It was far enough to change the impeller in the water pump but I wanted to do it right for when I need to do it again. The part about screwing it all the way in and then 4 1/2 turns out is great. Thanks to your help it made this job a lot easier. I will be buying the Factory manual. Regards.."
