Motor cuts out when accelerating quick after the engine has warmed up. When the engine is cold, quick accelerations are good. I changed the water separator element and the high pressure filter but no change in symptoms. I’ve seen some people report similar symptoms and have fixed it by replacing the thermostat. Does that sound logical? Maybe the thermostat is stuck half open not allowing enough cold water in?? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I’d suggest you change the thermostat if you haven’t done that recently, or at least remove it and test it. It may help your problem.

Does it cut out if you accelerate slowly and run it at normal speeds?

It sounds like a fuel restriction possibly, I’d run a high load of sea foam in the gas, it will remove varnish type things in your fuel system. Could also be a slight blockage in your tank vent- no air getting in as you burn gas. Your cold tank on startup will contract a bit allowing quick acceleration when cold. But by the time you warm up, your tank can’t contract any more/fast enough to allow a quick acceleration? Loosen gas cap and see if anything changes?

Thank you for the suggestions. We have a thermostat coming today. We have never replaced the thermostat and we bought the boat new 12 years ago. I'm hoping that's the problem.

When it cuts out, I can gradually increase the engine RPM up to maybe 2500-3000 RPM before it cuts off again. If I try to quickly accelerate it cuts out immediately.

Also, I looked for a vent on the fuel tank but couldn't find one. The tank is built-in with a 90 degree fitting coming off the top of the tank and then a line directly into the primer bulb. The fill lid may incorporate a vent but I'm not sure - this is a Lund Rebel 1625 XL. Thanks again for the suggestions. I'm hoping the thermostat does it.

Can’t hurt to change a 12 year old thermostat but was your telltale putting out lots of water? How old is your water pump?

Do you have any lights for an overheat alarm? It could be quitting due to an overheating caused by a bad thermostat but that should trigger a light and an alarm if you have one.

Do you have an external water separator on your fuel line, a Racor type filter? If you have an internal fuel tank, you could have water or sediment in it? The sea foam or other similar products will get rid of water in a fuel tank.

I replaced the impeller about three years ago. The telltale is putting out what looks like normal water stream. I do have alarms on the throttle control and they are not alarming which I thought would be strange if it was overheating. No external water separator. I’ll definitely run some sea foam through it as well. Thanks again for all the good suggestions.

Ok so the thermostat, while improving the telltale stream considerably, did nothing to help the cutting out problem. So to summarize: we have 2012 Honda BF60A LRTA that cuts out on rapid acceleration AFTER the engine is warm. When the engine is cold it accelerates out rapidly on takeoff and will maintain full throttle. After it is warm it cuts out as soon as you get to 2500-3000 RPM from a dead stop or lower speed (even if I accelerate very gradually). So far we have changed the water separator element as well as the HP fuel filter. We have now changed the thermostat (12 years old). The telltale water stream is much improved. We also run water through the thermostat opening and the water ran out of the intake below. We now have added Sea Foam to the fuel and added a half tank of non-ethanol fuel. What other suggestions would you guys have. Frustrating for sure!
