Honda BF5 won't start warm

I have a 1999 bf5. It starts on the first pull when the motor is cold. After it has been running a few minutes I cannot get it to restart after I shut it down until it has a chance to cool off. I have tried starter fluid but it wont even cough like its trying to start. I cleaned the carb, new gas, I have oil pressure, water pumps good, gas pumps when pulled, took gas cap off tank to vent, and I have good spark. I have run out of things to check. Can the coil be effected by temp? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

When you took the spark plugs out did they look very black? If it is running rich it will be hard to start when warm. There is also a possibility that as it warms a vacuum leak opens up in the intake manifold. You can spray around the manifold with carb cleaner or something similar and listen for a change in idle revs. If the revs change the spray is being drawn in and you have a leak. Be careful doing this however as carb cleaner is highly flammable.

Sounds to me like the coil could well be breaking down once hot. I was a motorbike mechanic for 30 odd years and I came across this problem many times. If the windings in the coil are cracked then they make contact when they`re cold but as the coil heats up then it expands and looses it`s contact causing it to stop producing a spark.

Run the engine until hot or until it stops running and quickly remove the spark plug and see if your still getting a spark when pulling the starter cord.

It`s really the first thing to check but let us know how you get on and I`ll do what I can to help.

Cheers, Matt.
