Honda BF20 D not charging

"Just got a jon boat that has a 2005 Honda 4 Stroke 20hp with a 12v/6A charger. However, I put it in the water and tested the current with a voltmeter. It is not putting out any current. I have only tested at idle. The fuse is OK. Any tips would be great, thanks."
 
That charging circuit does not

That charging circuit does not output a nice neat voltage like an car or an inboard's alternator. Try a small 12 volt lamp instead and rev it up slightly.

The voltage into the regulator

The voltage into the regulator is AC... either use a meter on the AC scale or a light bulb as previously recommended.
 
you need a load on the chargin

you need a load on the charging system for it to work
you will get no reading on it without a load
