Honda BF130 stalling issues when shifting from idle to Forward

I have a 1999 Honda BF130AXXA model that dies when shifting from idle to forward. This occurs after the motor has been run at extended idle time and also after extended trolling speed and attempting to give more throttle. I have had the following parts replaced by several mechanics including several certified Honda mechanics. New fuel injectors, throttle body assembly and associated oxygen sensors and a new idle control motor. None of these things have fixed the problem. It still stalls when shifting to forward after extended idle It doesn't happen every-time and it always restarts immediately with key. The new concensis is to replace the ECM, electronic control module to the tune of $480 plus shop time. Are there any other suggestions before I go this route? I've invested about $1800 in Honda parts and associated labor fees and haven't fixed the original problem. The first Honda dealer that replaced the injectors was already in bankruptcy proceedings unbeknownst to me at the time of the injector replacement and i had no recourse for further work there. Thanks for any suggestions. I don't know if there is a common malady associated with these motors that I should pursue.

My questions would be....

1. When the throttle body was replaced, was the idle adjusting screw on the throttle body adjusted? It has to be done with the IAC disconnected and service connector plug plugged in.

2. Did they check the temperature sensors?

3. Did they check the valve clearances. Clearances are critical to a good idle on the 130's.

4. Is the engine coming to temperature? Could the thermostat be stuck open and the engine running too cold?

Just some questions...

Mike,

Thanks for the prompt reply, I don't know the answers to your suggestions but i will try to determine them. I did have the valves adjusted before the onset of these issues perhaps the adjustment isn't correct and could be the cause of the problem. I will also ask the Honda shop that I take it to next to verify your suggestions. I did state that the valves had been adjusted prior to the issues I'm having but several of the mechanics minimized the role that could have played. Again thanks for your suggestions. Please disregard my first reply.

I also assume that if they changed the injectors and other things, that they at least checked the compression.

When the 130's first came out, we had to adjust the idle screw on every one of the 130's that we installed. It essentially sets the base idle. Once set correctly and the engine is warm, the engine will idle smoothly at about 100 rpm less that the standard idle with the IAC disconnected. If the dealer does not know how to do it, it is explained in the Service Manual in detail. The hardest part is getting to the screw with the intake muffler still in place and removing the sealant that covers the screw, so it can be adjusted.

There is always one other thing...

Do you use any sort of fuel treatment in your fuel?

Have you ever run any Yamaha Ring Free or Mercury Quickkleen in a tank of fuel to decarbonize the engine? If not, you may want to consider it. If you can find the Yamaha Ring Free, it seems to work quicker for a shock treatment.

Mike,

Thanks again for the additional ideas, to the best of my knowledge the compression wasn't checked when the new injectors were installed. That procedure was performed at the now bankrupt and closed Honda dealer marina early in this process. The suggestion regarding the idle screw adjustment process will be passed along as well. I will report back the latest diagnosis when received hopefully next week.
