Honda BF115 Shifting Issue

I replaced the waterpump on my BF115. When I put the lower unit back on, I was tightening it but it seemed harder that it should. I decided I would shift it to see if that might be the issue. It was not too hard to shift but when it did, the remote was very free.....so free that I thought I broke something.... Once the lower was fully tightened, the remote to shift worked very easy but it would not put it in forward or reverse. I had my son shift it while I watched the motor linkage - it moves but not far enough to engage in either direction. I took the lower unit back off. I again had my son shift it - the tube that goes over the lower unit shifter during the reinstall of lower unit moves but only a little - not enough to engage any gear. Did I break something? Is there an adjustment? Any help will be appreciated! It has been a long winter....looking forward to a spring pontoon ride. Thank you!

As an update, with the remote in forward, I pulled the sleeve that goes over the lower unit gear shift and it "clicked" into place. Now the motor will not shift back to neutral? I did not push the sleeve back up to see - I will wait for some feedback before I break something....

Sounds to me like the splines on the shift rods were not lined up.-----When you started forcing this you may have broken some parts up there that hold the 2 sector gears in place and properly timed.--------------Probably best to run to the repair shop.----Most shops have seen this issue before.

Crap! Is it very involved to fix it? Was hoping to use the boat this weekend but if I take to the shop, that will not happen.

Check out this thread. It is for a 150 but it sounds like your shifting problem has the same solution. http://www.marineengine.com/boat-fo...0-Shift-Rod-stuck&highlight=honda+shift+shaft

It refers to another parts link, but it does not go to the specific shift shaft parts page. This link does. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Honda/Outboard Engine/2004/BF150A4 LA/SHIFT SHAFT/parts.html

Basically, I think you pushed shift shaft A #12 up and popped off the e clip #11. Then shift shaft A #12 and and shift shaft B #18 got out of sync.

in the thread I go through a lot of detail (maybe too much detail) to get it straightened out.

By the way....what year 115 do you have. There is a 115A and 115D. If you have the 115D, it is exactly the same as the parts diagram for the 150A. Although, the shift shafts on the 115A are very similar to the 150.

Thanks Hondadude! Thanks for the links - I will jump on it and see if I can figure this out to get on the water soon. I will let you know how it goes! Thanks again!
