"I bought a Honda 10HP (BF100) from my neighbor who
had it stored in her cellar for years. Its appearance is very clean. I would like to put a fresh impeller in and run it. I've removed the 5 screws holding the lower unit and can get it to come down about an inch, but no more. I suspect that the shift lever needs to be detached somewhere. How does one detach it properly/most easily? Arghhhh, the Yamaha was easier to figure out."

Put into forward gear and remove the cotter pin and shift rod link attach pin. Only difficulty would be if you drop this 'pin' that passes through the fork of shifter lever and top of shift rod. Forward gear raises it up for best access.

Gasoline left in carburetor for storage of more than weeks can cause great frustration."

"Thank you. I was wondering if that pin
was the place to be. That hole does look scary. I was thinking of stuffing it with a couple of cotton balls just in case the pins decide to jump.
Thank you for the clue, I can now proceed knowing I'm on the right path."
