"I have a 1997 Honda BF50 Four Stroke on my boat. Shaft got a little jammed due to high idle I think...eventually could only do nuetral and reverse. Broke the shifter and had it replaced. Everything tested fine, go her in the water and Forward and Neutral worked great...no Reverse. Mechanic tinkered with the lower unit a bit....got reverse to start working again. Short time later....no reverse again. His analysis was that there is something wrong with the lower unit and that it should be replaced.
Do you guys agree with this analysis? With a 97 engine....it's in pretty good shape....hooked up to streaing and controls etc....is it worth having the lower unit replaced? Should I scrap the whole thing and move on to a newer engine?
Does anyone know where I can get a refurbished lower unit?"
