Honda B100 Recoil Seal

I purchased a recoil seal you know the square one that fits into the front of the lid or cowl and the recoil plate sits against it, it has what look like air vents molded into it on one length, should the vents be on top or on the bottom when you mount it into the lid? thanks for any info.
